Broadway Idol winners shine in Silver Spring

Twenty-eight of the brightest young stars of tomorrow were shining at the Randolph Road Theatre in Silver Spring on April 14th in the Musical Theater Center's third annual "Broadway Idol" Competition. Modeled after the popular "American Idol" talent show format, the competition featured performers in three age groups, with the winner of each group decided by audience vote.

Kylie Cooley, 8, takes first place in the "Children Idol" group at The Musical Theater Center's "Broadway Idol 2007" competition.

In addition to the audience vote, the contestants also received on-the-spot feedback from a panel of industry experts, just like competitors on the popular television show.

The "Children Idol" category featured artists from ages 5 - 10. Kylie Cooley, an 8-year old from Sykesville, MD and 10-year old Colton Harrington of Gaithersburg shared the top spot in the group. Maggie Donovan, age 14, of Boyds was the audience favorite in the "Pre-teen Idol" category (ages 11 - 14) and 18-year old Patrick Prebula of Gaithersburg won in the "Teen Idol" category (ages 15 - 18).

Winners in each category received a prize package that included an Omega Studios Recording Session and CD, Professional headshots by Bill Forehand, a Vocal Scholarship to The Musical Theatre Center (MTC) and a cash prize.

"This year's 'Broadway Idol' was a wonderful opportunity for these young performers to showcase their talents," said the MTC's Director of Education, Tommy Parlon. "All three winners faced stiff competition from the 25 other contestants, and it was a real challenge for the audience to pick the winners."

Proceeds from the event will benefit the Center's many programs, including those bringing musical theater training and performance experiences to children in the community who otherwise might not have these opportunities.
