Barrie Seniors reach basketball milestone

Jamie Roberts started the play with a defensive rebound and finished it with a three-point shot from the top of the arc.

Nothing but net, and number 1,000 of her career for the Barrie School Mustangs. The 17-year-old two-time all-conference selection, who is still trying to decide where to attend college, came into the final game of the season needing 12 points and got 15.

Eric White and Jamie Roberts hit the millennium mark

"I didn't know that was it when I let the ball go, but once everyone stood and started cheering I knew," said the soft-spoken senior, one of two Barrie School basketball players to hit the millennium mark this year.

While she finished her career with the milestone, this past summer she wasn't sure she would even be on the court this year.

She hurt her leg playing basketball over the summer break but instead of letting it get her down her coaches said she worked at strengthening her leg, keeping her shooting stroke true and remained positive throughout the rehabilitation process.

"She's an amazing player and an amazing person," said Madhavi Sabnis, who serves as the assistant coach for the girls team and once played for the blue and gold.

"I think one of the things that sets her apart from some athletes is that as good as she is, she's always there for her teammates and always trying to make them better. She's certainly the kind of player we can be proud of."

The comments nearly mimic those of coaches about Eric White, another player to hit the 1,000-point mark this year.

"He was kind of forced into running the show as a sophomore, said boys basketball Coach Jack Mitchell.

"You could see his determination; you could always see it in his face, if he didn't make the shot or the pass he would try harder again. He always stayed positive and he was always encouraging."

White, a two-time all conference selection, said he knew the 1,000-point mark was within reach with a handful of games to go, and he focused on reaching the mark.

"My coach told me I would need 50 points in my last three games to reach it, and I thought wow, I've been working towards this for four years and there it is, within reach," said White, who finished his high school career with 1,019 points.

While the two players hope to continue their court play in college, their milestone mark is expected to be preserved in a new Barrie School Hall of Fame that athletic director Michael Kowalchick said could be set for unveiling this summer. White and Roberts will join only four other players to have reached the 1,000 point mark in the 75-year history of the school.
