TPES books pajama party

Takoma Park Elementary School's PTA held its annual Scholastic Book Fair the week of February 26th, the pinnacle of which was Family Literacy Night on Wednesday.

Students arrived in their pajamas for a night of bedtime stories. Readers included adults near and dear to the children's hearts such as Principal Zadia Gadsden, Assistant Principal Elliott Alter, school librarian Rob Harper (pictured bottom right) and attendance secretary Sandy Egan (pictured at top). TP's Poet Laureate Don Berger regaled the children with favorite humorous poems from his childhood. Families left the readings to visit the media center, which was transformed into a book store for the week. Besides choosing their own, many visitors purchased books from teachers' wish lists, making a gift to the school.

The Book Fair was a great success by all measures, netting more than $5000 worth of new books for the school, according to PTA volunteer Susan West Montgomery.

On Friday the school culminated its literary celebration by wishing Theodore Geisel (a.k.a. Dr. Seuss) a happy birthday in classroom activities throughout the day.
