Opening night revelers put on their finery in celebration of the fourth annual SilverDocs Festival.
The annual SilverDocs Documentary Film Festival, presented by the American Film Institute and Discovery Communications, again showcased a rich and diverse slate of films, in keeping with AFI's fine tradition begun four years ago. Over 100 films from 22 countries were screened -- a testament to the creative explosion in the field of documentary filmmaking. Some films were brief, personal portraits of daily struggles. Some were huge in theme and vision. There was even room for an old favorite and a classic of the genre. All of the films had a singular desire: to tell a story as compelling and entertaining as their fictional counterparts.
Celebrated filmmaker Martin Scorsese talks with AFI's Jim Jarmusch at the Charles Guggenheim Symposium on June 15. The symposium honors a filmmaker with passion for the craft and an exemplary body of work. "Style is everything," Scorsese said. "It was my documentary material that led me to my style."
