Over 40 of the brightest young stars in the metropolitanarea were on display Saturday, April 1, at the Randolph
Road Theatre in Silver Spring in the Musical Theater
CenterŐs second annual "Broadway Idol" Competition.
Modeled after the popular "American Idol" talent show
format, the competition featured performers in three age
groups, with the winner of each group decided by audience
vote.
The "Children Idol" category featured artists from ages
5 - 10. Singing "What Dreams Are Made Of" propelled 9-
year old Jennifer Riebling to the top spot in the
group. Julia Sullivan , age 13, brought down the
house with her rendition of "When I Think About Angels"
to take first in the "Pre-teen Idol" category (ages 11 -14)
and 17-year old Katie Travers (right) won in the "Teen
Idol" category (ages 15 - 18) with the classic Motown hit
"Chain of Fools." All three winners faced stiff competition,
with 42 children competing in all three categories.
Winners in each category received a prize package that
included an Omega Studios Recording Session and CD,
Professional headshots by Bill Forehand and Audition
Preparation Consulting.
Proceeds from the show will be used to support MTC's
adult professional theater troupe, the Break-A-Leg Theatre
Company. MTC established the Company to offer
professional musical theater productions for young audiences and their families and to reach a wider and more
diverse audience.
