AFI kicks off SilverDocs with Midnight Madness

Dr. Frankenfurter (pictured, 5, below), Divine (6), and a staggering corpse greeted filmgoers at opening night of the American Film Institute's 3rd annual documentary film festival: SilverDocs.

The characters from T he Rocky Horror Picture Show , Pink Flamingos , and Night of the Living Dead dramatized the June 14 screening of Midnight Madness: From the Margins to the Mainstream , a documentary by Stuart Samuels, exploring the phenomenon of late night movies in the 1970s. The film was followed by discussion with film critic Joel Seigel--and an exhuberant party at the Discovery headquarters, featuring reggae band Culture and, inexplicably, Twinkies.

The festival brought over 80 new documentaries to the Silver Theatre, with six days of programming. Discovery is a SilverDocs partner.

(4) Budding filmmaker Cassie Chew documents the evening, perhaps shooting video that will be shown at a future festival. Below, Culture tops off the evening.
